Definition

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure aimed at saving an infected or seriously damaged tooth by treating the dental pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth containing the nerves and blood vessels).

This treatment preserves the tooth while eliminating the infection and the pain.

Why have a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is necessary in the following cases:

  • Deep tooth decay: When the bacteria reach the dental pulp.
  • Dental trauma: Fractures or impacts that expose or damage the pulp.
  • Infections or abscesses: Presence of an inflammation or cyst around the root.
  • Excessive tooth wear: Teeth weakened by bruxism or other factors.

Steps in root canal treatment

  1. Diagnosis and preparation
  • X-ray to locate the infection and assess the roots.
  • Local anaesthetic to ensure patient comfort.
  1. Access to the pulp

An opening is made in the tooth to access the root canals.

  1. Cleaning and disinfection
  • Removal of infected or necrotic pulp.
  • Cleaning and disinfection of the root canals to eliminate bacteria.
  1. Filling of the canals

The canals are filled with a biocompatible material, such as gutta-percha, to prevent reinfection.

Closure and restoration

  • A temporary or permanent filling is applied.
  • The tooth may require a crown to restore its strength and function.

Benefits of a root canal treatment

Preservation of the tooth: Avoids extraction and maintains the natural alignment of the teeth.

Elimination of pain: Relieves symptoms related to infection or inflammation.

Prevention of complications: Avoids the spread of infection to other parts of the mouth or body.

Care after a root canal treatment

  • Pain management
Temporary sensitivity is normal and can be controlled with painkillers.
  • Oral hygiene
Brush your teeth twice a day and use dental floss.
  • Follow-up consultation
Check the healing and plan the final restoration (crown if necessary).
